1911 Government vs Commander vs Officer: Which Frame Is Right for You?

The 1911 platform has been in continuous production for over a century, and in that time it's evolved into three distinct frame sizes: Government, Commander, and Officer. Each has a different barrel length, a different overall size, and — critically for grip buyers — a different grip frame with different panel dimensions.

Understanding which frame you have is the single most important step before ordering aftermarket grips. Here's everything you need to know.

The Three 1911 Frame Sizes

Government (5-inch barrel)

The original 1911 configuration. The Government frame is the longest and largest of the three, with a 5-inch barrel and a full-length grip frame. This is the configuration John Browning designed, the one that served in the U.S. military for 74 years, and the one that remains the most popular among 1911 enthusiasts today.

Grip panel dimensions: Standard Government grip panels measure approximately 4.25 inches tall. Grip screw spacing is 3 1/16 inches (77.8mm) center-to-center.

Common Government-frame pistols: Colt Government Model, Springfield Armory Loaded, Kimber Custom II, Rock Island Armory GI Standard, Dan Wesson Valor, Wilson Combat CQB.

Commander (4.25-inch barrel)

The Commander was introduced by Colt in 1950 as a lighter, more compact alternative to the Government. It uses a shorter slide and barrel — 4.25 inches — but retains the same grip frame as the Government model. This is the key point: Commander-length pistols use the same grip panels as Government-length pistols. The grip frame dimensions are identical.

If you have a Commander-length 1911, order Government-frame grip panels. They will fit perfectly.

Common Commander-frame pistols: Colt Commander, Colt Combat Commander, Springfield Armory Range Officer Compact (4.25-inch), Kimber Pro Carry II, Kimber Pro CDP II, Springfield Armory Loaded Operator (4-inch variants with standard grip frame).

Officer (3.5-inch barrel)

The Officer's ACP was introduced by Colt in 1985 as a compact carry pistol. It uses a shorter barrel AND a shorter grip frame — this is where the compatibility break happens. Officer-frame pistols have a grip that is approximately 5/8 inch shorter than the Government/Commander frame, with different screw spacing.

Grip panel dimensions: Officer grip panels are shorter than Government panels. Grip screw spacing is 2 11/16 inches (68.3mm) center-to-center — significantly different from the Government/Commander spacing.

Common Officer-frame pistols: Colt Officer's ACP, Colt Defender, Springfield Armory EMP (Enhanced Micro Pistol), Kimber Ultra Carry, Kimber Ultra CDP.

Important: Government-frame panels will NOT fit Officer-frame pistols, and Officer-frame panels will NOT fit Government-frame pistols. The screw spacing is different and the panel height is different. Ordering the wrong size is the most common grip-buying mistake on the 1911 platform.

How to Identify Your Frame Size

The easiest way is to measure your barrel length or check the model name:

  • 5-inch barrel — Government frame
  • 4.25-inch barrel — Commander frame (same grip panels as Government)
  • 4-inch barrel — Usually Commander frame, but verify — some 4-inch pistols use a shortened grip frame
  • 3.5-inch or shorter barrel — Officer frame

You can also measure the grip screw spacing directly: place a ruler between the centers of the two grip screws on one side. Government/Commander = approximately 3 1/16 inches. Officer = approximately 2 11/16 inches.

The Hybrid: Long-Slide and Bobtail Variants

Long-Slide (6-inch barrel)

Some 1911s are built on extended slides with 6-inch barrels. These use the same Government grip frame — the slide is longer, but the grip is identical. Government-frame panels fit long-slide 1911s without modification.

Bobtail Frames

Some custom and semi-custom 1911s feature a "bobtail" modification — the bottom rear corner of the grip frame is rounded off to reduce printing during concealed carry. Bobtail frames use standard Government-frame panels, but the panel's bottom rear corner may need to be trimmed to match the frame's modified profile. This is a custom fitting job, not a drop-in installation.
