1911 Grip Screw Guide: Types, Sizes, and How to Tighten Them Correctly

The grip screw is the smallest component on a 1911, and it's the one most likely to cause problems if you ignore it. Loose grip screws let panels wobble. Wrong-size screws strip bushings. Over-tightened screws crack wooden panels. None of these outcomes are acceptable on a pistol you've invested in.

Here's everything you need to know about 1911 grip screws — types, sizes, tools, and the right way to tighten them.

Standard 1911 Grip Screw Specifications

The standard 1911 grip screw has been the same since John Browning's original design:

  • Thread size: 5-40 UNC (5/40 unified coarse thread)
  • Head diameter: Approximately 0.30 inches
  • Head type: Flat (countersunk) — sits flush with or slightly below the grip panel surface
  • Drive type: Flat-head (slotted) on most factory and aftermarket screws

This specification is consistent across virtually all 1911 manufacturers — Colt, Springfield Armory, Kimber, Rock Island, Dan Wesson, Wilson Combat, and others all use the same 5-40 thread. If you're replacing screws, 5-40 is what you need.

Types of 1911 Grip Screws

Standard Flat-Head (Slotted)

The original and most common type. A single slot across the head, driven with a flat-head screwdriver. Simple, reliable, and historically correct. The main disadvantage is that flat-head screwdrivers can slip and mar the screw head or the grip panel if the fit isn't perfect.

Hex (Allen) Head

Some aftermarket grip screw sets use a hex socket head instead of a flat slot. These require a hex key (Allen wrench) to install and remove. The advantage is that hex keys are less likely to slip than flat-head screwdrivers, reducing the risk of marring the panel. The disadvantage is that you need the right hex key on hand — typically 3/32" or 1/8".

Torx Head

Less common, but used by some manufacturers. Torx screws require a Torx driver (T8 or T10 for most 1911 grip screws). Like hex screws, they're less prone to cam-out than flat-head screws.

Decorative Heads

Some aftermarket grip screw sets feature decorative heads — coin-slot designs, engraved patterns, or colored anodized finishes. These are cosmetic upgrades that use the same 5-40 thread. They're driven with a flat-head screwdriver like standard screws.

The Grip Bushing

The grip screw doesn't thread directly into the frame — it threads into a grip bushing, a small threaded insert pressed into the frame. There are four bushings on a standard Government or Commander 1911 (two per side).

Bushings can work loose over time, especially on pistols that have had grips changed frequently. A loose bushing will spin when you try to tighten the grip screw, making it impossible to secure the panel. If this happens, the bushing needs to be re-staked or replaced — a job for a gunsmith or an experienced 1911 owner with the right tools.

Before installing new grips, check that all four bushings are tight and flush with the frame. Grip them with pliers (carefully, to avoid marring) and confirm they don't rotate.

The Right Screwdriver

Using the wrong screwdriver is the most common cause of marred grip screws and damaged panels. For flat-head grip screws, you need a screwdriver with a blade that:

  • Fits the slot width exactly — too narrow and it will cam out; too wide and it will contact the panel surface
  • Has a flat, parallel-sided tip — not a tapered household screwdriver tip, which will cam out under torque
  • Is the right thickness — the blade should fill the slot depth without bottoming out

Gunsmithing screwdriver sets (Brownells, Wheeler, Grace USA) include hollow-ground bits specifically sized for firearm screws. A quality gunsmithing screwdriver set is worth the investment if you work on firearms regularly. A standard household screwdriver is not the right tool for grip screws.

How to Tighten Grip Screws Correctly

This is where most grip installations go wrong. The correct sequence:

  1. Start both screws on each side by hand before tightening either one. Get both screws threaded in a few turns before applying any torque. This ensures the panel is properly seated before you lock it down.
  2. Snug the screws in a cross pattern. Tighten the top screw on the left side, then the bottom screw on the right side, then the bottom screw on the left side, then the top screw on the right side. This seats the panel evenly.
  3. Firm, not tight. The goal is to hold the panel completely rigid with no movement — not to apply maximum torque. Wood compresses under excessive torque, and the screw hole can crack or elongate. If you feel significant resistance, stop.
  4. Check for panel movement. After tightening, try to rock the panel with your thumb. There should be zero movement. If there's any wobble, the screw isn't fully seated or the bushing is loose.
  5. Check screw head height. The screw head should be flush with or very slightly below the panel surface. A proud screw head (sticking up above the surface) indicates the countersink is too shallow or the screw is the wrong length.

How Tight Is Tight Enough?

There's no published torque specification for 1911 grip screws — the correct tightness is a feel, not a number. A useful reference: tighten until the panel is completely rigid, then add approximately a quarter turn. That's typically sufficient. If you're using a quality gunsmithing screwdriver with a proper fit, you'll feel the resistance increase as the screw seats — stop when the resistance becomes firm rather than easy.

For wooden grips specifically: err on the side of slightly less torque rather than more. Wood is more compressible than metal, and the screw hole is the most vulnerable point on a wooden panel. A panel that's held firmly with no wobble is correctly tightened, regardless of how much torque it took to get there.

Preventing Screws from Loosening

Grip screws can work loose over time, especially on pistols that are carried daily or shot frequently. Options to prevent this:

  • Blue Loctite (242): A drop of blue Loctite on the screw threads before installation will prevent loosening while still allowing removal with a screwdriver. Do not use red Loctite — it's permanent and will make removal very difficult.
  • Check tightness regularly: For carry pistols, check grip screw tightness monthly. For range guns, check every few range sessions.
  • Replace worn screws: Screws with damaged slots or rounded heads should be replaced. A damaged screw head makes proper tightening impossible and increases the risk of slipping and marring the panel.

Replacing Grip Screws

Replacement 5-40 grip screws are widely available from Brownells, Midway USA, and other firearms parts suppliers. When replacing screws, match the head style (flat, hex, or Torx) to your existing setup unless you're intentionally upgrading. Screw length should match the original — too long and the screw will bottom out in the bushing before clamping the panel; too short and it won't engage enough threads for a secure hold.
