Checkering refers to a pattern of raised or cut diamonds, squares, or lines machined into the surface of the grip panel. The pattern creates friction between your hand and the grip, improving purchase — especially when your hands are wet, sweaty, or gloved.

Checkering comes in different cuts and depths:

  • Fine checkering (18–20 LPI): Subtle texture, comfortable for extended handling, still provides good grip enhancement.
  • Medium checkering (16–18 LPI): The most common cut — a balance of texture and comfort that works well for most applications.
  • Coarse checkering (under 16 LPI): Aggressive texture, maximum grip, but can be uncomfortable during long range sessions without gloves.

What Are Smooth Grips?

Smooth grips have a flat, uninterrupted surface that showcases the natural grain and figure of the wood. They rely on the natural friction of wood against skin rather than mechanical texture.

Smooth panels are not slippery — wood has inherent grip properties that synthetic materials lack. But they do provide less friction than checkered panels, particularly in wet or high-stress conditions.

Checkered Grips: Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Superior grip security under stress, in wet conditions, or with gloves
  • Reduces grip shift during rapid-fire strings
  • Preferred for duty, defensive carry, and competition use
  • Creates a more tactical, purposeful aesthetic

Cons:

  • Can be uncomfortable during extended range sessions without gloves
  • More aggressive on clothing during concealed carry
  • Partially obscures the natural wood grain

Yes — slightly. Denser woods like Root Walnut and Blackwood have a tighter grain that feels slightly smoother to the touch, even on checkered panels. Premium Walnut and Redwood have a slightly more open grain that provides a bit more natural friction on smooth panels.

In practice, the difference is subtle — the texture pattern (checkered vs. smooth) has a far greater impact on grip than the wood species.
