How to Store a Pistol with Wooden Grips: Long-Term Care Guide

A pistol with wooden grips stored correctly will look and function as well in twenty years as it does today. Stored incorrectly, the wood can dry out, crack, warp, or develop mold — and the metal underneath can rust. Neither outcome is acceptable for a firearm you've invested in.

Here's exactly how to store a pistol with wooden grips for the short term, long term, and everything in between.

The Two Enemies of Stored Firearms: Moisture and Dryness

Wood and metal respond to their storage environment in opposite ways, which makes firearm storage a balancing act:

  • Too much moisture causes metal to rust and wood to swell, potentially warping grip panels or causing them to bind against the frame. In extreme cases, mold can develop on wooden surfaces.
  • Too little moisture causes wood to dry out, shrink, and eventually crack. Grip panels stored in very dry conditions — heated homes in winter, desert climates — can develop surface checks (small cracks) or split around the screw holes over time.

The target is a stable, moderate humidity environment: 45–55% relative humidity is ideal for both wood and metal. This is the same range recommended for musical instruments, fine furniture, and other wood objects that need to last.

Short-Term Storage (Days to Weeks)

For a pistol you're not shooting regularly but will use again soon, basic precautions are sufficient:

  1. Clean and dry the pistol before storage. Fingerprints contain salt and moisture that accelerate rust. Wipe down all metal surfaces with a lightly oiled cloth. Wipe the wooden grips with a dry cloth to remove fingerprints and sweat.
  2. Store in a dry location away from direct sunlight. UV light fades wood and degrades finishes over time. A drawer, cabinet, or case is better than a shelf in direct light.
  3. Avoid plastic bags for short-term storage. Sealed plastic traps moisture against the metal and wood, accelerating rust and potentially causing mold on the grips.

Long-Term Storage (Months to Years)

For extended storage, more deliberate preparation is needed:

  1. Oil the wooden grips before storage. Apply a thin coat of boiled linseed oil, tung oil, or Danish oil and let it cure fully before storing. This seals the wood against moisture loss during storage.
  2. Apply a light coat of gun oil to all metal surfaces. This protects against rust during storage. Don't over-oil — excess oil can migrate onto the wooden grips and cause problems over time.
  3. Use a gun safe or lockable cabinet. Beyond security, a quality gun safe provides a more stable environment than open storage.
  4. Control humidity inside the safe. A dehumidifier rod (also called a golden rod) maintains low, stable humidity inside a sealed safe. This is the single most effective long-term storage upgrade you can make. Set it to maintain 40–50% relative humidity.
  5. Avoid silica gel packets alone for long-term storage. Silica gel absorbs moisture but doesn't maintain a target humidity level — in very dry conditions, it can actually pull too much moisture from the wood. A dehumidifier rod with a hygrometer is more reliable.
  6. Check every 6 months. Inspect the grips for any signs of drying (surface checks, color fading) or moisture damage (swelling, mold). Re-oil the grips if they look or feel dry.

Climate-Specific Considerations

Humid Climates (Southeast US, Gulf Coast, Hawaii)

High ambient humidity is the primary concern. A dehumidifier rod in a sealed safe is essential. Check metal surfaces more frequently for rust. Wooden grips in humid climates are generally at lower risk of drying out, but mold is a real concern if humidity exceeds 65% for extended periods.

Dry Climates (Southwest US, Mountain West)

Low humidity is the primary concern for wooden grips. Oil the grips more frequently — every 3–4 months rather than every 6. Consider adding a small humidifier pack (the kind used for guitar cases) inside the safe to maintain minimum humidity levels. Watch for surface checks on the wood, especially around the screw holes.

Heated Homes in Winter

Central heating dramatically reduces indoor humidity in winter — often to 20–30% relative humidity. This is very dry for wooden grips. If you store firearms in a heated space without humidity control, oil the grips before the heating season begins and check them mid-winter.

What to Avoid

  • Foam-lined cases for long-term storage: Many foam materials off-gas chemicals that can damage metal finishes and wood over time. They also trap moisture. Use foam cases for transport, not long-term storage.
  • Leather holsters for storage: Leather retains moisture and can cause rust on stored firearms. Don't store a pistol in a leather holster.
  • Attics and garages: These spaces experience extreme temperature and humidity swings that are hard on both wood and metal. A climate-controlled interior space is always better.
  • Direct contact with newspaper: Newspaper ink contains acids that can damage metal finishes over time.

Inspecting Grips After Storage

When you retrieve a stored pistol, inspect the wooden grips before use:

  • Check for any surface checks or cracks, especially around the screw holes
  • Check that the panels still sit flush with no wobble — significant wood movement can affect fit
  • Check screw tightness — wood movement during storage can loosen grip screws
  • If the wood looks dry or faded, apply a light coat of oil and let it cure before use
