How Wood Gun Grips Are Made: From Raw Timber to Finished Panel

Most people who buy wooden gun grips think about the end result — the warm grain, the precise fit, the way the pistol feels different in the hand. Fewer think about what it takes to get there. The process of turning raw timber into a finished grip panel is more involved than it looks, and understanding it helps explain why quality wooden grips cost what they do — and why the difference between a well-made panel and a poorly made one is immediately obvious.

Here's how TK Grips makes wooden pistol grip panels, from raw material to finished product.

Step 1: Wood Selection

Everything starts with the wood. Not all walnut is the same. Not all Blackwood is the same. Within any species, there's enormous variation in grain pattern, density, color consistency, and figure — the visual complexity of the grain.

At TK Grips, wood is selected by hand. Each blank — the rough piece of wood that will become a grip panel — is evaluated for grain orientation, density, and visual character before it enters production. Blanks with defects, inconsistent grain, or structural weaknesses are rejected before any machining begins.

This selection step is where the difference between species becomes tangible:

  • Premium Walnut blanks are selected for consistent color and straight, even grain — the classic walnut look that's been on pistol grips for over a century.
  • Redwood blanks are selected for their characteristic reddish-amber tone and fine, consistent grain structure.
  • Root Walnut blanks are selected specifically for dramatic figure — the more chaotic and visually complex the grain, the better. No two Root Walnut blanks are alike, which is the point.
  • Blackwood blanks are selected for density and color consistency — the deep, near-black tone that makes this species distinctive.

Step 2: Drying and Stabilization

Raw wood contains moisture. If grip panels are machined from wood that hasn't been properly dried, they'll shrink, warp, or crack as they lose moisture after installation — potentially causing fit problems or structural failure around the screw holes.

Properly dried wood — brought to a stable moisture content appropriate for the end use environment — is dimensionally stable. It won't move significantly with normal changes in humidity and temperature.

This step is invisible in the finished product, but it's one of the most important quality factors in wooden grip manufacturing. Grips made from improperly dried wood will fail eventually, regardless of how well they're machined.

Step 3: CNC Machining

Once the blanks are selected and dried, they go to the CNC machine. CNC — Computer Numerical Control — machining uses computer-controlled cutting tools to remove material with precision that human hands can't match consistently.

For grip panels, CNC machining handles several operations:

  • Profile cutting: The blank is cut to the exact outer profile of the grip panel — the shape that matches the pistol's grip frame.
  • Back relief: The back of the panel (the side that contacts the frame) is machined to match the frame's contours precisely. This is where fit quality is determined — a panel that doesn't match the frame geometry will rock, gap, or require force to install.
  • Screw holes: The grip screw holes are drilled and countersunk to exact dimensions. Hole placement is critical — even a fraction of a millimeter off-center will cause the panel to misalign on the frame.
  • Control clearances: Reliefs for safety levers, magazine releases, and other controls are machined into the panel. These clearances must be precise — too tight and the control binds; too loose and the panel looks sloppy.
  • Texture patterns: Checkering, FishScale, and other surface textures are cut by the CNC machine using specialized cutting tools. The depth, spacing, and sharpness of the pattern are all controlled by the machine program.

The advantage of CNC machining over hand-cutting is consistency. Every panel cut from the same program to the same specification will be identical in dimension. This is what makes drop-in fit possible — the panel is machined to the frame's dimensions, not fitted by hand to a specific pistol.

Step 4: Inlay Work

For designs that include inlays — gold initial letters, logo medallions, Swiss Cross accents — the inlay work happens after the primary machining is complete.

Inlay pockets are machined to precise depth and dimension. The inlay material is set into the pocket and secured. On personalized initial panels, each letter is set individually — this is the step that makes personalized grips genuinely custom rather than just printed.

Step 5: Sanding and Surface Preparation

After machining, the panels are sanded through progressively finer grits to remove machining marks and prepare the surface for finishing. This step requires attention — aggressive sanding can round over the edges of checkering patterns, dulling the texture that the CNC machine cut precisely.

The goal is a surface that's smooth to the touch in the non-textured areas, with crisp, sharp texture patterns that haven't been softened by over-sanding.

Step 6: Finishing

The final step is applying the oil finish. TK Grips panels are finished with a hand-applied oil — penetrating the wood rather than sitting on top of it like a film finish. This approach preserves the natural feel of the wood, allows the grain to show at its best, and produces a finish that improves with handling rather than wearing away.

Oil finishing is slower than spray finishing, but the result is a panel that feels like wood — warm, natural, and alive — rather than a panel that feels like plastic with a wood pattern underneath.

Step 7: Quality Inspection

Before shipping, each panel is inspected for fit, finish, and visual quality. Screw hole alignment is checked. Texture sharpness is verified. The back relief is confirmed to match the frame specification. Panels that don't meet the standard are rejected.

This final step is what separates a production process from a manufacturing process — the human eye catching what the machine can't measure.
